OVERVIEW

The Vocational Nursing (VN) Program prepares students to become licensed practical/vocational nurses, equipping them to provide direct patient care in various healthcare settings.

The program is accredited by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. Graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN® exam, required for licensure and employment as an LVN.

VN Program Student Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Vocational (VN) Program will be able to:

Provide Safe, Patient-Centered Care:

  • Deliver compassionate, culturally sensitive care that respects the patient’s dignity and preferences.

  • Apply the nursing process to assist in planning, delivering, and evaluating care

Demonstrate Clinical Competence:

  • Perform nursing skills safely and effectively within the scope of practice for a licensed practical/vocational nurse.

  • Use clinical judgment to make appropriate decisions in routine patient care situations.

Communicate Effectively:

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team.

  • Document patient care accurately and timely using appropriate medical terminology and technology.

 

Promote Health and Wellness:

  • Support patient education to promote health maintenance and disease prevention across the lifespan.

  • Recognize and report abnormal findings and changes in patient condition.

Collaborate as a Member of the Healthcare Team:

  • Work effectively under the supervision of registered nurses and other licensed healthcare providers.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary care planning and delivery.

Demonstrate Professionalism and Accountability:

  • Practice within ethical, legal, and regulatory frameworks of practical/vocational nursing.

  • Exhibit responsibility for continued learning and growth in nursing practice.

  • Use Evidence-Based Practices:

  • Apply current best practices and guidelines to support clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes.

  • Incorporate principles of quality improvement and safety in all aspects of care.

Admission Requirements for the Vocational Nursing Program

Oxman College is committed to admitting students from diverse backgrounds without regard to race, color, gender, age, nationality, religious beliefs, or political affiliations. Below are the detailed admission requirements for the Vocational Nursing program.

General Admission Requirements

  1. High School Diploma or Equivalent

    • Applicants must have a high school diploma from an accredited institution or an equivalent certificate.

    • The applicant must be at least 18 years old (official ID required for verification).

  2. Transcript Submission

    • Official transcripts must be submitted directly from the high school and any previous colleges to the Office of Admissions.

  3. Complete all required prerequisite courses with a grade of B or above.

       A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for all pre-requisite courses.

   4. Applicants from Foreign High Schools

       If the applicant completed high school outside of the United States, they must

       provide an evaluated copy of their foreign high school diploma.

   5. Enrollment Agreement

       All applicants must complete the Enrollment Agreement before admission.

   6. Financial Arrangements

       Applicants must complete their financial arrangements before starting the program.

   7. Nationwide Background Criminal Check (LiveScan, FBI, and DOJ)

​      Complete a background check during the prereq course

 

   8. Proof of Vaccinations

  • Proof of the following vaccinations is required:

    • Mumps, Measles, Rubella

    • Varicella

    • Hepatitis B

    • Annual TB skin test or Chest X-ray

    • Annual flu shot

   10. Drug Testing

        Applicants must pass a 10 Panel Drug Test.

   11. Hospital approved Fire Card (blue card good for four years) as required by clinical facilities.
   12. American Heart Association approved CPR Card as required by clinical facilities

Admission Examination

  1. TEAS Test (Test of Essential Academic Skills)

    • Applicants can submit TEAS test scores from outside institutions. A minimum score of 75% is required for admission.

  2. HESI A2 (Health Education Systems Incorporated A2)

    • Applicants may also take the HESI A2 exam. The minimum required composite score is 75% (covering Math, Reading, and Grammar). The entire exam must be completed in a single session.

    • Higher scores in these areas will be given preference in the admissions process.

English Language Proficiency

  • All applicants must demonstrate proficiency in both verbal and written English.

  • English language proficiency will be assessed through the entrance test and the admission interview.

Selection Process

  • The applicants who meet the minimum requirements and earn the highest points based on the departmental rubric will be selected for the current cohort.

  • In case more qualified applicants exist than spots are available in a given cohort, those who are not admitted will have the opportunity to reapply for future cohorts.
